How Often Should You See an OB-GYN? A Checkup Guide for Every Stage

A gynecologic checkup is one of the most important tools for protecting your health. Still, many women aren’t sure how often they should go, or they put it off until something feels wrong. In this guide we explain what is usually recommended at each stage of life and when it’s better not to wait.

How often is a gynecologic checkup recommended?

As a general rule, a yearly gynecologic checkup is recommended, even if you feel fine. The exact schedule and the tests you need depend on your age, your medical history and your family history, so your physician should set the right plan for you.

What is checked at each stage

Adolescence

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests a first visit between ages 13 and 15. It is usually a conversation about the menstrual cycle, body changes and questions, and it doesn’t always involve an exam.

Reproductive years

This is when the yearly visit matters most. It may include cervical cancer screening (Pap test and, depending on the case, HPV testing), a breast exam, guidance on birth control and planning for pregnancy.

Pregnancy

If you think you may be pregnant, schedule your first prenatal visit as soon as possible. Prenatal care helps monitor your health and your baby’s throughout the pregnancy and prepare for childbirth.

Menopause and beyond

Gynecologic checkups are still needed after menopause. Your physician can help with symptoms such as hot flashes or dryness and keep up with the screenings appropriate for your age.

Symptoms worth a visit before your yearly checkup

  • Bleeding between periods or after menopause
  • Severe pelvic or menstrual pain that doesn’t improve
  • Discharge with an unusual odor, color or amount
  • Lumps or changes in your breasts
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Very irregular or missed periods

None of these symptoms necessarily means something serious, but they do deserve a medical evaluation.
